Why are zealotous(gr?) religious people always so mean and nasty to others?

All my life, I've noticed the same pattern:the more religious some people claim to be, the more mean-spirited they actually are. Even here, every single answer from a "religious" perspective always comes with a belittling, condescending, pompous tone. What's that about?
