Does Boric Acid really work to kill roaches because so far it hasn't! PLEASE HELP!?

I have an infestation of roaches. I bought some Boric Acid Powder from the pharmacy at the supermarket. At first I put it in select places in milk jug lids and mixed in a little sugar to attract the roaches. However, that did not slow down the roach population. In fact I think there are more roaches now! Since then I have literally poured out the Boric Acid powder into the dark places where I think they hide and even thrown it onto the roaches! Does Boric Acid really work? Or I am expecting it to work too soon? I need to get rid of the roaces asap...HELP!
