My friend put his Beta Fish in a bowl of oil and the submerged fish survived, how is this possib?

My friend completely submerged his fish in a bowl of oil and completely submerged it and it pretty much survived and swam around then he moved it back to its tank, how is this possible? are fish able to breath in such a substance??
